چکیده

climate-controlled greenhouse at the G.C.Horn turf field laboratory at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Floratam St.Augustinegrass is being compared with a mix of ornamentals including canna, nandina, ligustrum and allamanda. Plant material is growing in 80-gallon plastic pots in an Arredondo fine sand. There are three fertilizer treatments (16-4-8 quick-release, 15-0-15 quick-release, 8-4-12 slow-release) applied at 1.0 lb. N/1000 sq. ft. every other month. There are four replications. Leachate is collected at three intervals following treatment and analyzed for nitrate and phosphate content. Quality ratings are taken weekly and multispectral reflectance readings are taken biweekly. Water is applied to meet the evapotranspiration. Turfgrass tubs are mowed biweekly by hand. In this preliminary work, turf was more responsive than ornamentals to fertilizers and preliminary data indicate best turfgrass response from quick release 16-4-8 and 15-0-15 treatments. During the establishment period, water use was lower in turf than ornamentals.

Nitrate leaching and turf quality in established 'Floratam' St. Augustinegrass and 'Empire' zoysiagrass.

The objectives of this research were to evaluate nitrate N (NO³-N) leaching and turf response to nitrogen rate (NR) and irrigation regime (IR) in 'Floratam' St. Augustinegrass ( [Walt.] Kuntze.) and 'Empire' zoysiagrass ( Steud). The research was conducted in Citra, FL, from 2005 through 2007. Nitrogen (N) was applied at annual rates of 32, 64, 128, and 196 kg ha⁻¹ in 2005, and at 49, 196, 343,...

Expression Analysis of Rice Defense-Related Genes in Turfgrass in Response to Magnaporthe grisea.

ABSTRACT Magnaporthe grisea (anamorph = Pyricularia grisea) causes blast on rice (Oryza sativa) and gray leaf spot on turfgrass. Gray leaf spot is a serious disease on St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). Virulence assays performed in this study revealed that M. grisea collected from rice could also cause disea...

Improved plant regeneration and in vitro somatic embryogenesis of St Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze]

St Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze] is an important warm season turf and pasture grass. In vitro tissue culture of St Augustinegrass could serve as an important mean for its improvement through genetic transformation as well as induced somaclonal variation. To optimize tissue culture conditions for plant regeneration of St Augustinegrass, tissue culture responses of 11 ex...

Influence of plant parameters on occurrence and abundance of arthropods in residential turfgrass.

The effect of taxa [common Bermuda grass, Cynodon dactylon (L.); centipedegrass, Eremochloa ophiuroides Munro Hack; St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum [Walt.] Kuntze; and zoysiagrass, Zoysia spp.], density, height, and weed density on abundance of natural enemies, and their potential prey were evaluated in residential turf. Total predatory Heteroptera were most abundant in St. Augustin...

Tissue culture-induced morphological somaclonal variation in St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum

Somaclonal variation has been observed in many plant species and is an alternative way to create variants and expand the germplasm pool. A large scale tissue culture experiment was conducted with St. Augustinegrass, an important turfgrass species for the southern USA, to induce somaclonal variation to enlarge the germplasm pool for breeding efforts. Using an improved protocol, approximately 790...
